1. Before the freeze!
Make sure the soil around your plants has plenty of residual mositure by deeply watering your plants 10 days prior to the freeze.
2. Don’t fertilize.
Adding fertilizer late in the season promotes new growth that can be damaged by winter weather. Skip the fall fertilization.
3. Don’t prune.
Pruning, like fertiziler, can promote new growth. Avoid pruning your garden in the fall unless its a hazard issue.
4. MULCH!
Winter mulch can add a layer of insulation for tender perennials or newly planted plants.
5. Cover if needed.
Depending on the winter and the plant, covering plants with canvasm old sheets or burlap might be needed to save your garden from winter.
